Stick on the Kettle

Being Irish there are two constants in life, tea and humour. If there is an emergency our first thought and natural response is to stick the kettle on. It distracts us from the situation at hand and we clutch it like a warm comfortable blanket. To lessen pain or cut tension Irish people lean heavily on making those around us laugh. It is the ultimate defence mechanism. It makes us unique. As a predominantly visual person, I always see words or process feelings through pictures in my mind. Like Dustin Hoffman in Rain-man minus the human calculator autistic genius – except I sacrifice numbers for mildly amusing images. For some strange reason I have always been comforted by the ridiculousness of visualising a twig on a kettle in times of crisis. So, here I share my neurosis with you and hope this oddly funny image can comfort you in any difficult situation.

* PS: A friend once told me to put the kettle on. It was the oddest thing I’d ever worn!
