Our Story

Black Hen is the creation of husband-and-wife duo, Vida and Andy established in late 2010. They design and make a wonderful collection of framed illustrations on glass, all from their workshop based in Roscommon. Each and every piece is inspired by their love of nature here in the Irish countryside with specific emphasis on wildlife. For them, creating great design is all about keeping it simple, fresh and contemporary, but best of all making people smile. Vida and Andy are delighted to now supply over 80 stores who are passionate about great quality and unique design throughout the Island of Ireland, United Kingdom and further afield.

"I grew up in the west of Ireland on a small dairy farm, milking cows, feeding chickens and rearing turf as well as being creative. It was something that came naturally to me and I knew I either wanted to become a farmer or an artist one day. Andy on the other hand grew up in Surrey but spent many of his school summer holidays with his grandparents in the Isle of Wight. This was a place he felt at home, enjoying the freedom of the countryside and exploring his love of nature. Fast forward some years later having met in London we decided to return to my native village of Lisacul, to live and work."

The Early Years

"Having studied as a painter, it was a long-time ambition of mine to start a separate business, so whilst Andy was recovering from a slipped disc in August of 2010, I suggested he try his hand at drawing some wildlife using a technique called 'reverse glass painting' especially as I knew he had a hidden gift for drawing."
The Start of a New Idea

After making a number of illustrations on glass, Vida and Andy headed off to some local agricultural and craft shows to see what people thought. With an overwhelmingly positive response, the duo went about creating a unique style and gave it the name Black Hen Designs, inspired by their lovely black Orpington hens.
New Challenges

Later the duo took a stand with the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland at Bloom in The Park and met the buyer from Kilkenny Design, and the rest as they say is history. They have featured in The Irish Examiner, Giftfocus UK, Discover Ireland, and in 2022, a radio interview with Pat Kenny on Newstalk called 'Keep it Local'.
