"They halted while Haines surveyed the tower and said at last; - Rather bleak in winter time I should say. Martello you call it?" - James Joyce, Ulysses. The Martello Tower in Sandycove (or 'Joyce's Tower' as it is fondly known by locals) features heavily in the first chapter of Ulysses and as such is a key point of interest and celebration amongst Bloomsday enthusiasts. Apart from its obvious historical significance, it is a very beautiful and iconic landmark in the gorgeous fishing village of Sandycove and serves as a popular meeting point for bathers and walkers alike.
Ruth Moloney's uniquely joyous collection of Irish landscape, people and nature are warm, sentimental and nostalgic.
